In 1987, German aviator Mathias Rust by-passed Soviet air
defense and landed in Red Square. His feat was seized upon in the West as an act of political critique, while in the East it irreparably
damaged the reputation of the military, helping Gorbachev to push
through his reforms. Rust’s alleged intention to build an imaginary
bridge had unforeseen consequences.
